Detailed Review
Notion was founded by Ivan Zhao and Simon Last in 2013, but didn't find its final product until 2016 after several pivots. Ivan Zhao, who has loved design since childhood, wanted to create a tool that was both "flexible as a database and as beautiful as a notebook" — a rare combination in B2B software. Nearly bankrupt in 2015, Notion staged a comeback by deciding to rebuild from scratch using Electron.
Notion AI was launched in November 2022, just days before ChatGPT, as the first AI assistant integrated directly into a workspace. Instead of switching tabs to ChatGPT, Notion AI works right within the context of your documents. Summarize a 5,000-word meeting note down to bullet points? One keystroke. Write a draft email from a short note? A few seconds.
The AI Assistant Q&A feature completely changed how people use Notion. Instead of having to remember where a document is, just ask: "What did we decide in the March pricing meeting?" and the AI answers with a link directly to the right page. This is true semantic search, not keyword matching.
Current Developments (2025–2026)
Notion AI 2.0 with connected search across the entire workspace — including database entries, comments, and linked pages — is rolling out. Notion Projects with AI-powered sprint planning and automatic task assignment is being tested by enterprise customers. Integration with Google Drive and Slack allows the AI to answer questions about content not just in Notion but across all company tools.
