Detailed Review
Telegram was created by brothers Pavel and Nikolai Durov in 2013, after they were forced to sell VKontakte (Russia's largest social network — "Russia's Facebook") under pressure from the Kremlin. Pavel Durov, dubbed the "Mark Zuckerberg of Russia," left Russia in 2014 and traveled widely before settling in Dubai. Telegram was built with a clear vision: messaging that could never be controlled by any government.
The MTProto protocol — the encryption protocol designed by Nikolai Durov — is the technical reason for Telegram's speed and security. Server-client encryption with Cloud Chats and end-to-end encryption with Secret Chats creates a tiered security model suitable for different use cases. Notably impressive is that Telegram continues to operate effectively in Iran, Russia, and many countries with internet censorship.
Unlimited-subscriber Channels are another killer differentiator from WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Artists, journalists, activists, and non-profit organizations build "media outlets" on Telegram without depending on Facebook's algorithm. Crypto communities, trading signals, and everything shadow-banned on other platforms can freely exist on Telegram.
Current Developments (2025–2026)
Pavel Durov was arrested in France in August 2024 on charges of failing to cooperate with investigations into illegal content — an event that shook the tech community and raised questions about the limits of platform responsibility. Telegram Premium has reached 5 million paying subscribers. The TON blockchain integrated into the Telegram wallet enables sending crypto directly in chat. Telegram has expanded monetization for channel owners through an ads platform.
Strengths
- Group chats up to 200,000 members, unlimited channel subscribers — the most powerful community platform available
- Send 2GB files without compression, without quality loss — easily share original video, software, and archives
- The most powerful Bot API of any messaging app — automation from e-commerce to gaming can all be built on Telegram
- Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted and self-destruct — absolute privacy when you need it
Areas for Improvement
- Regular chats are NOT end-to-end encrypted — Telegram can technically access message content if they choose
- No document collaboration or business-grade video calls — falls short of Slack as a workplace tool
- Username-based contact discovery allows strangers to find you if privacy settings are not turned off
