About This Product
2012
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia → Singapore
Anthony Tan (CEO, Malaysian-Chinese) and Tan Hooi Ling (Malaysian)
Detailed Review
Grab was co-founded in 2012 by Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling while both were completing a final project at Harvard Business School. Anthony Tan, a son of the Tan Chong Motor family (Nissan distributors in Malaysia), identified a safety problem with taxis in Malaysia and wanted to create a "safe ride solution." Grab (originally MyTeksi) started as a taxi booking app in Kuala Lumpur.
The decision to move headquarters to Singapore in 2014 and receive investment from SoftBank Vision Fund ($2 billion) transformed Grab into a regional champion across Southeast Asia. When Uber exited the Southeast Asian market in 2018 (in exchange for a 27.5% stake in Grab), Grab became completely dominant. The lesson from Uber: local team, local knowledge, and local relationships beat a global brand.
GrabPay — the digital wallet and payment processing platform — transformed Grab from a ride-hailing company into a financial services platform. Grab Financial Group provides micro-loans for drivers and merchants, insurance, and investment products. This is the same fintech strategy as MoMo but at a Southeast Asian scale. Grab listed on Nasdaq via SPAC in December 2021, though the stock has declined significantly since then.
Current Developments (2025–2026)
GrabAds attracts major brands because of data on the movement patterns and spending behavior of 35 million users across 8 countries. Grab's AI Recommender has significantly improved driver matching and route optimization. GrabMart (grocery delivery) is competing with Shopee Food and GoTo. A partnership with MoMo in Vietnam for cross-platform payments is being negotiated. Grab is on a path to profitability after years of high burn rates.
